Mr Castro abandoned his trademark cigars in 1986 and this month declared himself a strong suporter of the smoking ban. Still, the exports will continue and Mr Castro himself has said he would continue personally handing out thousands of cigars each year.
"I give people cigars and tell them it is poison, he said recently. "I say: smoke them if you like. but the best thing you can do with that box of cigars is give it to your enemy."
